Scarlet Nantes Carrot

$3.95

Daucus carota

Days to Maturity: 65-75

A classic heirloom variety known for its smooth, cylindrical, and 6" blunt-tipped roots. Its bright orange skin and fine-grained core offer a crisp, sweet flavor, making it excellent for eating raw or juicing. Known for its uniform shape and tender texture, and can perform well in a variety of soil conditions.

Planting Instructions: Direct sow Scarlet Nantes carrot seeds in early spring or late summer. Plant seeds 1/4" deep, 1" apart in rows spaced 12-18" apart. Thin to 3-4" avoid overcrowding once they reach a couple inches in height. Keep moist until seeds germinate-- it is easy for carrot seed to dry out when first planted and can take up to 3 weeks to germinate.

Seed Saving Instructions: At the end of the first season, select the best-looking and tastiest roots for seed saving by tasting a small bite from side or tip of root. In warmer climates like the desert southwest, leave these in the ground to overwinter and cover with straw. In colder climates like the Rocky Mountains, place roots in very slightly moist sand in a root cellar or cool place and re-plant roots in the spring. Carrots will flower and go to seed in 2nd season. Collect Scarlet Nantes carrot seeds when fully dry and crumbling. Store seeds in a cool, dark and dry place.
