Ocimum basilicum
Classic Italian culinary herb whose fresh leaves placed atop the finest pizzas, tomato sauces & alfredos; and ground for pesto. Try drying leaves for flavorful winter seasoning or grinding & freezing for easy winter pesto. Easy and satisfying to grow. Good patio, container or kitchen window herb.
Planting Instructions: Start in flats and transplant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed, or direct seed outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Sow 1/4" deep and keep seeds moist. Basil loves warmth and dies with frosts, so make sure to harvest all your remaining basil (or cover well) when the first fall frost arrives. To prolong your basil harvest, pinch off flowering tops.
Seed Saving Instructions: Allow select plants to bolt and go to seed. Collect seeds when dry and they easily crumble into your hand (or a bucket). Store in a cool, dark and dry place.
