Northern Ruby Tomato

$5.25

Solanum lycopersicum

Days to Maturity: 65-75 from transplant

An early paste tomato, Northern Ruby produces prolific fruits on short, determinate plants perfect for containers, raised beds and compact spaces. This heirloom delivers generous harvests of smooth, ruby-red fruits even in shorter growing seasons. The 3" medium-sized tomatoes offer a classic, well-balanced flavor that shines in sandwiches, salads, and fresh summer meals. Vigorous and dependable plants make this variety a favorite for gardeners seeking both earliness and excellent taste. Northern Ruby was an original Heinz variety and was bred for 20 years by grower Doug Beaty in Montana.

Planting Instructions: Start Northern Ruby Tomato seeds indoors under grow lights or in a greenhouse 6-10 weeks before last frost. Transplant 2+ weeks after last frost when soil has warmed a bit. Space plants at least 4 feet apart. Support growth with tomato cages, a trellis or wire. Water regularly but avoid overwatering (soil should be moist but not wet).

Seed Saving Instructions: When fully ripe, pick your tastiest fruits from the most vigorous plants. Cut open and squeeze Northern Ruby Tomato seeds and juice into a jar. Secure a cloth over the jar so air can enter. Ferment the juice and seeds in the jar for 2-3 days. Then strain and rinse the seeds. Dry on a screen or cloth. Store seeds in a paper or mesh bag in a cool, dark and dry location.
