Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce

$7.00

Lactuca sativa

Days to Maturity: 40-55

A favorite since the 1800s, Black-Seeded Simpson lettuce is loved for its bright-green, frilly leaves and tender, sweet flavor. Quick to mature and slow to bolt, this easy-to-grow heirloom thrives in cool spring and fall gardens, containers, and raised beds. Perfect for fresh salads and sandwiches. Succession planting every two weeks keeps the harvest coming all season long.

Likely originating in England, Black Seeded Simpson was introduced in the US by Peter Henderson & Co. of New York.

Planting Instructions: Sow Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce seeds outdoors in early spring thru late spring and again in early fall. Sprinkle 1/4" soil on top, keep evenly moist until germinated.

Seed Saving Instructions: Allow most vigorous and tastiest plants to bolt & flower. Collect seed when white fluffs form from the flowerheads. Store seeds in a paper or mesh bag in a cool, dark and dry location.
