Tepary Bean, Multicolor Landrace

$8.00

Phaseolus acutifolius

Days to Maturity: 75-85

Tepary beans are one of our all-time favorite seeds! Tepary beans are incredibly drought tolerant, having been selected from beans surviving in the desert with only monsoon rains. Their leaves are more pointy than other beans, and the seeds are flatter and wrinklier. This landrace seed includes a wide color diversity--yellow, brown, pink, black, white and speckled beans. Highly recommended for any southwestern gardener, especially in low water areas. Very easy to grow. They shatter when fully ripe so checking regularly for maturity and using a tarp are helpful.

Tepary beans can be eaten green when young and tender, or cooked when dry. The flavor of the cooked dry beans is earthy, mild and slightly nutty, and pairs incredibly with spices like chile, cumin and coriander. Great for soups.

Original seeds sourced from Joseph Lofthouse in Paradise, UT.

Planting Instructions: Sow Tepary bean seeds directly in the ground 1" deep, 3" apart in spring after all danger of frost has passed. Keep moist until germinated. Highly drought tolerant, do not overwater.

Seed Saving Instructions: Allow Tepary bean pods to fully dry on the vine. Place a tarp under row and pull entire plant. Crush to dislodge beans. Store beans in a paper or mesh bag to ensure they dry fully and remain dry.

Approx 60 Tepary Bean seeds per packet.
