Cold Set Tomato

$6.00

Solanum lycopersicum

Days to Maturity: 68 from transplant

Are you a mountain or short-season gardener? Cold Set tomato is a determinate from Ontario adapted to cold weather and a short growing window. You can actually plant the seeds in cold, 50 degree soil!!

Abundant fruits are shiny, bright red and round, weighing in at 4-6oz for a great medium-sized treat. The flesh is dense and makes good sauce.

Original seeds from Miss Penn's Mountain Seeds, who sourced them from Gurney's in 1989. Grown by Groundwork in Paonia, CO.

Be sure to check out all of our short-season (less than 90 day) tomato varieties:

  • Goluboy Les (Blue Forest)
  • Peacevine Cherry
  • San Marzano
  • Mt Roma
  • Sungold
  • Cyril's Choice
  • Gold Nugget
  • Alaska
  • Mountain Girl
  • Cold Set
  • Market Miracle
  • Moscow
  • Black Cherry
  • Russian Green
  • Gold Rush Currant
  • Coyote

Planting Instructions: Start Cold Set Tomato seeds indoors under grow lights or in a greenhouse 6-10 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors around the last frost. Or be brave and try direct seeding some outside, since they tolerate cold soil! Space plants at least 4 feet apart. Water regularly but avoid overwatering (soil should be moist but not wet).

Seed Saving Instructions: When fully ripe, pick your tastiest fruits from the most vigorous plants. Cut open and squeeze Cold Set Tomato seeds and juice into a jar. Secure a cloth over the jar so air can enter. Ferment the juice and seeds in the jar for 2-3 days. Then strain and rinse the seeds. Dry on a screen or cloth. Store seeds in a paper or mesh bag in a cool, dark and dry location.
