Helianthus annuus
Mammoth Russian Sunflowers are gigantic, towering to over 8-10+ feet! Huge flower heads produce abundant sunflower seeds perfect for snacking, adding to animal feed and delighting the birds. Seeds can be pressed to make sunflower oil. These giant sunflower heirlooms are so easy and impressive to grow. Kids (and the young at heart) love playing in a forest of them.
Planting Instructions: Plant Mammoth Russian Sunflower seeds directly in the ground 6-12" apart after last frost. Do not overwater.
Seed Saving Instructions: First flowers will dry and start drooping (see 3rd & 4th photos). Then seeds will start to dry out. Cut whole flower heads and remove seeds so they can fully dry. We like to use a rubber glove to dislodge the seeds from the flowerhead. Store seeds in a paper or mesh bag in a cool, dark and dry location.
